Frequently asked questions.

Does my child need to already be self-directed to attend Embark?
Not at all. Embark is a place where young people become more self-directed over time. With the support of mentors, peers, and a caring community, they gradually build the confidence and skills to take charge of their own learning—at their own pace.

Do you have a curriculum or structure?
We don’t follow a traditional curriculum. Instead, learning is guided by curiosity, goals, and daily life. While students choose how to spend their time, we offer plenty of structure—classes, mentorship, and shared agreements help support their experience.

What if my child only wants to play video games?
We see video games, like all play, as rich with potential for learning and growth. Mentors engage students in conversations about their interests, helping them reflect on how their choices align with their goals.

How do students learn things like math without tests or grades?
Skills emerge naturally through projects, conversations, and real needs. Math shows up in everything from budgeting to game design. Instead of tests, we observe growth through what students create, say, and pursue.

How will my child be exposed to new things?
Inspiration is everywhere—through peer interests, spontaneous conversations, shared spaces, and mentor suggestions. Students encounter new ideas all the time, often in unexpected ways.

Can students still get into college?
Yes. Many build unique portfolios and transcripts that stand out to admissions officers. We support students with applications, interviews, and post-secondary planning—including college, apprenticeships, or entering the workforce.

What kind of learner thrives here?
Embark is for a wide range of young people—not just those who are already self-directed. What matters most is a willingness to be part of a community and explore learning outside traditional structures.

How do students build responsibility if they only do what they like?
Responsibility doesn’t come from force—it comes from purpose. When students set their own goals and face real challenges, they build resilience, problem-solving skills, and confidence.

Will my child connect with peers in a mixed-age setting?
Absolutely. Our multi-age community encourages friendships across age lines, grounded in shared interests and mutual respect.

What if my child wants to go back to school?
We’ll help with that transition, including documenting learning and supporting the re-entry process.
